ART AND DESIGN

At our schools we aim for our children to develop their knowledge and skills to invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We enable our learners to think critically in order to understand the varying nature of art and design regardless of ability. Through art, children are given the opportunity to communicate what they see, feel and think using a wide variety of materials and processes and begin to develop a lifelong appreciation of art in life and culture.

Our aim for children leaving our school at the end of Year 6 is for children to:

  • confidently use a range of materials, tools and techniques
  • communicate collaboratively in response to the senses
  • know about great artists and designers and the historical development of their art
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other artistic techniques
  • have visited an art gallery or museum to see art up close

EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE

In the EYFS children are given free opportunities to explore art through the senses both indoors and outdoors. They are taught to safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, and become confident in experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function through continuous provision.

Key Stage 1 and 2

Sketchbooks are used throughout the school for children to record ideas and observations and for children particularly at Key Stage 2 to use them to review and revisit ideas.

Children study various artists and designers relevant to their learning in class and approach the arts through other curriculum subjects as well as learning the skills needed in painting, sculpture, drawing and 3D work.

The Art Lead looks closely at the Art curriculum to ensure there is breadth of study and each year group follows the Skills in Art scheme of work which has been developed with the needs of our learners in mind.
